Thomas Kneubühler 'Private Property' September 5 – October 1, 2006.
“Private Property/Propriété Privée” is a major new body of work of large format colour photographs that reflect his continuous concern with places where access is restricted and is protected by security cameras and guards.
“The photographs for Private Property Propriété Privée were taken in places where people should not be… North America is preoccupied with security, and it embraces the idea of private property. Unlike most European countries, where natural resources are accessible to everybody even when privately owned, the concept of private property is a distinctive part of North American society.”
Born in Solothurn, Switzerland, Thomas Kneubühler came to Canada for the first time in 1996 as part of an artist-in-residence exchange program. In 2003, he completed a Master's degree in Studio Arts at Concordia University, Montreal. In the past few years, his projects have received funding form Arts Councils in Switzerland and Canada, and were shown in exhibitions in Europe and North America. His work often deals with social issues and how technology is affecting people’s lives. Critical attention was received for Kneubühler’s project Office 2000, which was shown in exhibitions across Canada and in Mexico. His work can be found in many public and private collections.
Recently, Les Editions Dazibao in Montréal published a book of Kneubühler’s new body of work, Private Property Propriété Privée, in it’s series Les Portables .
