Mauricio Limón Squeegees
March 24-April 24 2010
Projex-Mtl is pleased to present Squeegees an exhibition of recent works on paper, videos and sculpture by Mexico city based artist Mauricio Limón. This will be the artist’s first solo exhibition with Projex-Mtl galerie and in Canada.
Squeegees is the result of observation by collaborating with street kids in Mexico city who make a living cleaning car windshields for a few pesos. The characters in his drawings and videos are real people the artist has befriended and worked with for this body of work. Through his drawings Limon documents signs and symbols by Squeegees in their everyday life. The constant concern about identity is addressed in the Caps series of drawing and in Chicotazo. The hats function as an element of submission that exposes the social class that is deeply rooted in Mexican culture. The hats history in Mexico is to protect but is also used to express moods and messages by colour and positioning on the head.
The main focus of Mauricio Limóns past works has related to psychosomatic experiences from the use of different psychotropical substances. Another facet of his work has addressed the chronic effects that one experiences during neurology tests (EEG), which measure the activities in the nervous system. Having direct experiences with both of these kind of events, the artist has given us a personal view of his experiences.
Mauricio Limóns projects are known to a variety of curators who have invited him to participate in international exhibitions.
His work has been exhibited in the Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil, Mexico (2003,2006), Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (2005), P74 Center and Gallery, Ljubljana-Eslovenia (2007), Musee d'art Contemporain du Val de Marne, Paris (2007), Casa Luis Barragán, Mexico (2007), Museo de Arte Moderno, Mexico(2008), Centre Pompidou, Paris (2008), Museo Universitario de Ciencias y Arte (Roma), Mexico (2009) Art Sydney 2009.
